What studies entail
A major element in a doctoral programme consists of a student's own studies, research and the doctoral thesis that corresponds to at least 120 higher education credits.
Many programmes of research training include course work of varying duration, but never exceeding 120 higher education credits.
To earn a PhD a student must pass the courses that form part of the programme and write an acceptable doctoral dissertation that is defended successfully in public.
